LastPass - Master Password Reset Procedure
Notes
If you forget your LastPass master password, IT can assist in getting the password reset and allow you to create a new password. Submit a ticket for assistance. Once IT resets your password, there are some stumbling blocks that tend to crop up to make the process more confusing. This procedure should help clear up some of that confusion. Please note that the "Forgot Password?" link in LastPass is disabled.
Procedure
- Submit a helpdesk ticket to begin the journey
- You will be given a new password by IT. This will be your new temporary Master Password to allow you to sign in and create a new password of your own
- Browse to LastPass.com and choose "Log In" or click on the LastPass Extension in Chrome or Edge
-
Enter your MJ email address in the Email address field (this might be the old @mjinsurance.com or @procourseadv.com if you were here before February 2024)

-
Enter the temporary password you were given by IT in the Master Password field. (We typically use LastPass to create these so copy/paste will be much easier than typing)
- Please make sure there are no spaces before or after the password!

-
You might get a message saying you need to verify your identity before you're allowed to sign in. If not, skip to step 8 and MFA.
- If you need to verify your identity, you will receive an email shortly from do-not-reply-support@lastpass.com with the subject "LastPass Security Notification: Login attempt blocked"
- That email has a well-hidden link to verify your identity and allow you to sign in: Click the bright red line under "Yes, it was me"

- You can now go back to the login screen and sign in, then should be presented with an MFA prompt, shown in step 8
-
You will be prompted for an MFA code. Retrieve the code from whatever authenticator you used when setting up your LastPass account
- Tip: If you enable the slider below the Passcode field you won't be prompted for MFA again for 30 days (only valid on the same device and browser)

-
You will now be prompted to change your password. Enter the password you were given by IT in the "Old Master Password" field. Enter your new password in the "New Master Password" field. This must meet the strict requirements set by LastPass and CANNOT be the same as your email / PC login password. (Hint: passphrases are much easier to remember than a bunch of random characters.)
- Note that after you enter your new master password, you must confirm the password by typing it again in another box below the requirements

- You should now be able to sign into LastPass using your new master password. If anything went wrong along the way, IT will be happy to help sort it out.
